Egg and Expectation

Linda Fuller-Smith

The carton is where old
poem fragments go

lines and rhymes lacking
aplomb now paper pulp

formed into function
and nurture, cradling

the un-cracked eggs
that are nothing

but encapsulated dream
wearing a cipher

of shallow divots
on brittle surfaces

which we struggle
to diagram in words

as life wanes in the waiting
for what is anchored

in darkness, unable to hatch,
doomed to be eaten.

Once a professional ballet dancer from Columbus, Ohio, Linda Fuller-Smith also lived in Florence, Italy and in Southern California where she received a degree in Creative Writing from Long Beach City College. Most recently her poems appeared in Common Threads, Gyroscope Review and Caesura, and a selection of her writing received an Ohio Arts Council’s Individual Excellence Award.
