A MOMENT IN OCTOBER (After Su Tung Po)

George Freek

Leaves fall in the moonlight.
I watch a solitary girl stroll
down the darkened street.
Leaves blow like rose petals
before her sandaled feet.
The leaves fall through the night.
The moon is like glass.
Like last summer’s leaves,
the girl has disappeared.
She’s left me with a memory
of things that pass.
As the clouds darken,
rain begins to fall
on the leaves, on the grass.
